At the Banks of the Rhine

At the Banks of the Rhine
March 1945

All: [Collective gasp at the immense size of the river]

Silence befalls the group except for the faint sound of a voice over the radio.

Kapowski: "It's as big as the Mississippi!"

Evans: "It's somethin' alright..."

[More static over the radio]

Captain: [to the lieutenant] "Well would you look at that?"

Lieutenant: [to the captain] "My God! It's huge!"

Captain: [to the lieutenant] "We'll be the first to cross it since Caesar!"

Lieutenant: [to the captain] "First since Napoleon, actually, sir."

Captain: [to the lieutenant] "They teach you that at Yale?"

Captain: [to the radio operator] "Sparky, tell battalion we're at the Goddamn Rhine!"

Kapowski: [to Evans] "We cross that and we get to go home."

Evans: [to Kapowski] "Nah, we still gotta get to Berlin."

Kapowski: [to Evans] "And ya know what's on the other side of that river? BERLIN!"

Evans: [to Kapowski] "Sure. Cross the river. Turn right. Then go another 200 miles."

Sparky: [to the captain] "Sir, battalion's sending someone up."

Captain: [to Sparky] "Why? Don't they believe we're here? Tell 'em I'm pissin' in the Rhine right now!"

Bravo Fred, and thanks for your effort to put together those figures and create this nice scene.

Your US figures always source of inspiration.

Jaime.

Re: At the Banks of the Rhine

Very clever Fred, nice group of GI's. Looks like you took advantage of a flood at your place.

Re: At the Banks of the Rhine

Thanks, guys!

Scott is correct - we had a tropical monsoon between back to back snows on Tuesday here in southwestern Ohio; the creek fully crested over my driveway just a few hours after I shot these photos, submerging the location where they were shot.

During a lull in the rain that morning, I surveyed the flooding. A lightbulb went on in my head and gears started turning. I quickly switched gear and uniforms on several of these guys and about an hour later I had them set up for the photos.

It was an opportunity I might not have again for some time and I'm glad I took the initiative to take the photos when I did.

Thank you for your compliments, guys! They are much appreciated! Glad you enjoyed my little photoshoot!

Fred

Re: At the Banks of the Rhine

Superb job. Great storyline. The B&Ws are convincing. Is that twin creek overflowing? you guys have had the weather for sure.

Re: At the Banks of the Rhine

Mucha appreciated, Dennis! Glad you like everything!

The creek - well, the run that runs through my property is Lesley Run. It feeds into Twin Creek, though.

It crested the driveway fully this past rain. I've never seen that happen before in the 23 years I've lived here. I had to seize the moment and do this little photoshoot.
