DiD WW1 button corrosion...

I got into WWI recently after coming across letters from a Great uncle of mine that fought with the 4th IN Div in France.

I have picked up Pascal Dubois and Buck Jones, as well as Fritz Ludder. In the case of Dubois and Jones, both have three or four zinc buttons that are covered with white corrosion, which I am having trouble getting rid of.

Suggestions? It seems wire brushing and repainting is the best thing to do?

If they are truly zinc, and it sounds like they are, there are a few tricks to try and get rid of the corrosion.
Lemon juice and vinegar are traditional remedies. I have also tried scrubbing with a toothbrush and toothpaste and gotten decent results
