17 Pdr Pheasant

Hi All,

I have got some use of my left index finger back but not enough yet to do any real master work. Seems like a good time to get all the parts of the new project laid out and start bolting together some more metal stuff.

Best regards

Dave

Re: 17 Pdr Pheasant

Hi All,

With a little filing the 17 Pdr slide fits the slide trough of the 25 Pdr. Good progress today on the 25 Pdr carriage. This is actually the first rime I have been able to add our update set to a kit as I build it rather than afterwards :-)

Best regards

Dave

Incredible details - as usual! Going to be a really unique piece. Those rivets are mind boggling!

Re: 17 Pdr Pheasant

Hi All,

Still don't have full use of my index finger but I can move it enough now to get on with a few simple new bits. I've started some of the new parts such as the handle and modified bracket for the traversing ring handles and the locking handle that goes underneath. I think these will be added to the 25 Pdr set in due course along with some of the slide trough nosing parts etc. We will offer an add on pack for those who already have the set but want the extras.

I'm trying to find the link again where some time ago I bought the brass turnbuckles. I'll post it if I find it.

Best regards

Dave

Re: 17 Pdr Pheasant

Hi All,

I've cut a 4mm recess under the front edge of the 17 Pdr gun slide as I did with the 25 Pdr to allow it to sit further forward over the nosing. It allows the gun slide to sit in the right position within the trough. Also started adding some detail to the gun slide.

Best regards

Dave

Re: 17 Pdr Pheasant

Hi All,

Traversing ring done and waiting for new end plates. It has been corrected at some point and the traversing ring now has the bars in line with the outer spikes as it should unlike the early models which I built. This means the end plates I made originally clash with the fixing so I have made a new set that utilises this. I should have the first set by the end of next week and they will go out as standard on all new update sets including the one we are producing for a customer at present.

I've glued sections of plastic quadrant round the upper inner edge of the ring to represent the upper rim and then the whole lot has been blended together with Mr Surfacer 500 before rounding off the 2 outer sharp edges.

I've used some extra 2.5mm button screws to assembly it rather than rivets and will fill the heads before I paint it. Just made it that much quicker and simpler to assemble...............sorry.

Best regards

Dave

Re: 17 Pdr Pheasant

HI All,

Got some more new masters done for the 25 Pdr set. Open sight parts, spirit level, sight clamp and oil can tray. Managed to get casts off the miiliput carriage strengthening parts I made yesterday but they are very thin and not sure how they will stand up to production casting. Will give it some thought.

Best regards

Dave

Re: 17 Pdr Pheasant

Hi All,

I wasn't going to do this but someone asked about it yesterday so I thought why not. Good news is although I still can't fully bend my index finger I am adapting to working around it :-)

Best regards

Dave

Re: 17 Pdr Pheasant

Slipped with the scalpel, went into the side of my left index finger just behind the middle joint, under the bone and left a trail of destruction on its way.............................

Just add it to the list of self inflicted injuries I have sustained over the years and when you see the little patches of red that appear on some parts in almost every build you will know I'm telling the truth when I say "a little bit of me goes into everything I do" :-)

Best regards

Dave

Re: 17 Pdr Pheasant

Hi All,

0.5mm thick Lead foil arrived today so started making some of the straps. I used to use the 0.1mm version of this on 1/35th and 1/16th scale stuff so, as webbing and straps are getting harder to find in 1/6th, thought I'd give it a go. Please remember this is lead sheet so if you decide to use it ensure you wash your hands after and keep it away from children

Best regards

Dave

Re: 17 Pdr Pheasant

Hi Dave,
That's a great idea for straps, had not thought of lead sheet. When you fold it over to hold the buckle do you glue it (ie with cyano or epoxy)?

I was planning to use 0.01" (.25mm) styrene. Its easy to work and you can glue it in place with model glue. Although the plastic will not drape like the lead will.

These will look great once painted!

Re: 17 Pdr Pheasant

Hi All,

Yes, straps are fixed with superglue. I got the lead foil from 4D modelshop, quite a few sell the thin stuff but the .5 is better for 1/6th.

Dave,

I hope you will recover well from your war wounds!

The lead strips for straps look great! I also love the oil can!

Great job all around!

Brilliant work Dave, and thanks for that web on Lead , as getting hard to find lead anymore, with parents not keeping an eye on their kids.

Cheers

Re: 17 Pdr Pheasant

Hi All,

With all the missing masters now replaced with the metal and resin cast parts the 17 Pounder "Pheasant" is finished. I won't be painting this ahead of Tankfest and War and Peace as its the only unpainted gun we currently have showing the updates.

Best regards

Dave

Magnificent details. I like it unpainted. Although hopefully the steel parts don't rust. Beautiful piece.
