Ba-64 kit - build

Not to derail the other thread about the kit any further, decided it was time to start my own thread. Building this kit as much as stock as possible. I plan to run a wood frame under this one and use straight axles with no steering mechanism. Looking about 13.5Ē wheelbase. Front fender area is kind of wonky right now.

This design came from a paper model so I made choices about what edges to butt & what to bevel. This led to certain misalignments. I had to add a bit to parts labeled 7 & 8 on the upper hull. I reworked parts 11 & 12 under the front fenders as well. I had a part labeled 29 that appears to be a bulkhead in the front engine area. I may have put it in the wrong place so had to modify that on the fly. There are no louvers in the front engine area, but plenty of scrap on the sprue to make my own.

Re: Ba-64 kit - build

Working on a wooden frame to go underneath. Also attached the doors with resin hinges. Same for the hood. Hood handle is just heat bent styrene. I also reworked & attached the driverís visor. I added extra bits to the V guard in front of the turret. The small ports on the side had a thin strip added around. The port covers will work like the real ones. Not attached yet. I relocated the slits on the turret and plugged the holes in the doors. I have wheels on order and a DT mg coming from China.

Great start. Coming along nicely. Where did you get the resin hinges from?

Re: Ba-64 kit - build

The hinges are leftover from my resin casting days. Back when I was making Marder parts. I made a master and molded it. Whenever Iíd cast anything, the extra resin went in the hinge mold. They are crude & require cleaning up. But Iíve always had enough for my projects.

Looks great. And the hinges are excellent, even if they start out crude.

Thanks for the affirmation.

Working on the first, functional door latch.

Made from leftover scraps from the kit/sprue and some styrene rod.

Following this with interest. I also have a DT coming from a place in China, but I think it may be a scam site. Where are you getting yours?

Re: Ba-64 kit - build

My DT is coming from eBay seller ďgiftofangelĒ and the tracking is updating regularly.

The wheels i ordered, on the other hand, might have been a scam. That was MonkeyHobby who have a hit or miss reputation. Supposed to ship in a few days & be here by DHL in a week. That is overly optimistic. Havenít shipped. No order updates. Iíll give them a couple weeks. Thankfully I have the protection of PayPal.

Re: Ba-64 kit - build

Minimal work lately. Made a dashboard. Itís a start. The wheels were delivered. Had them shipped elsewhere. Picking them up next weekend.

The MG from eBay is looking like the scam now. They sent a customs form (claim this is because it looks like a gun) & claim the product will ship separately. Well the tracking went with the form so it shows as delivered. Maybe something else will show up but now I have no way to fight it with PayPal.

Sorry to hear about your DT purchase. I can't find one anywhere so I'm going to give it a shot at making one.

I'm always envious of the scratch-building efforts of those on the SAG and your build is definitely further proof of that, looking forward to seeing the finished product. Thanks for sharing, Steve

Says the guy who has single-handedly kept the figure/diorama side of this hobby alive here for the last few years. 😆

In other news: it looks like the DT did actually ship and could be delivered next week. Tracking number was finally provided and the shipment has unfortunately sat in ISC NY for a month. Now it sits in Queens. Another postal abyss.

Re: Ba-64 kit - build

I attached the frame today with some screws inside. Tough part was deciding where to put these screws so they were accessible and didnít hit the frame in a bad place.

Axles are 1/2Ē dowel. Wheels are screwed on. I used 3/8Ē conduit straps to attach them to the frame. The gear boxes are 2 mated 3/4Ē barbed pvc adapters with the barb cut off both & one shortened. They slipped over the dowel and were fixed in place with styrene shims & glue.

For some reason my pictures arenít showing. There hotlinked to postimages yet wonít show. Iíll try again later.

I guess the pictures are working now. At least for me.

Mounted the spare wheel. Definitely adds to the look of the vehicle.

Re: Ba-64 kit - build

The build is coming along very nicely. Glad to hear the DT will be coming (eventually). Would like to get started on my BA-64, but I still have the SD250 to finish. Unfortunately, I got roped in to doing another house remodel (after I just finished my mother's house). My youngest son just bought a house, and it needs some work. I didn't think retirement would be so busy!!!

Re: Ba-64 kit - build

Thanks. Iím having to be creative with this. Currently living in an apartment so I donít have access to the usual tools. Not even my Dremel. So this is a Harbor Freight build. Beyond my Mikita drill, Xacto knife, & some drill bits, all the other tools came from HF. For example this vise, flush cut saw, & file set.

https://www.harborfreight.com/2-1-2-...ise-97160.html
https://www.harborfreight.com/12-in-...saw-62118.html
https://www.harborfreight.com/12-in-...-pc-60368.html

Just goes to show what you can do with limited resources. Iíll have to drive to a relatives house to paint it when I get that far.
