Hermann Goering Para-Panzer Pzkw 2 in Italy?
I was reading strength reports from the HG Panzer for 1944, 1July.
Type. ---------- Authorized. ----- Available. Assault gun. ------- 31. ---------- 0 Pz II ----------------- 3. ----------- 2 PZ IV---------------- 98. ----------- 12 PZ V.------------------3. ---------- 0 Pz 38t.---------------12. ---------- ? AC&APC.-------------341.---------- 118 SP/AT---------------- 28. ----------0 Officers.-------------- 655.-------------495 NCOs.--------------- 5126------------3285 Men.---------------- 15368----------13148 Aux volunteers. ------- 972------------140 Total. -------------- 22157---------- 17045 So, what model Pz II would these have been, and where were they assigned? Recon? HQ Security? And Pz 38t? In 1944? This also shows that a paper division was much less powerful than one might think. Last edited by Charlie Foxtrot; 02-06-2014 at 05:03 AM. Reason: alignment |

Re: Hermann Goering Para-Panzer Pzkw 2 in Italy?
Seeing as nobody has offered any answer, i'll offer my educated guess....
I would say they were issued to the panzer reconnaissance platoon attached to the headquarters company of the panzer regiment, probably to be used until newer models such as the Lynx were issued. The reconnaissance platoons attached to headquarters companies of the panzer and infantry regiments respectively should not be mistaken for the dedicated reconnaissance battalion (Aufklarungs Abteilung).

Re: Hermann Goering Para-Panzer Pzkw 2 in Italy?
Just a side note, follow up... from reading diaries etc...
Pzkw II in Italy were not Luchs model, which went to East and later West front. Pzkw II usually worked in pairs, usually with a platoon of medium tanks.
