German Army Sledge for Troops

Hi Guys

Once in a while I have to take a break from assembling parts and filling orders, today was one of those days, just have to relax and my best remedy is to build some thing new. So I had a go at a German Army sledge for troop carrying.

I started the build at 12 noon and was taking these pictures a 6 pm. I only had two pictures to work with and no other information, I don't even know the correct name for it. Any help or other pictures would be appreciated as there are a lot of details I cannot see in these pictures.

Pictures I worked with, having the 251 rear end in the pictures helped me scale the sledge.

Results of the build, more features to be added when I get more details. Completely made of wood, with aluminum A frame for towing.

Regards
Mike

Re: German Army Sledge for Troops

Mike let me look I have pictures of the real deal. It sits on top of my Sister-in-Laws garage in Germany. It was picked up by Her Brother a long time ago and used as a flower planter until it was moved to its new resting place.

Mike here are a couple of pictures I took of the sledge back in 05 when I was back there. My Wife's Sister is coming over next week and if the sled is still there Her Son is going to take measurements and some better pictures.

Re: German Army Sledge for Troops

Hi Guys

Thanks for the kind comments. Billy, the sledge you have pictured is the Light Army Cargo Sled Hs 1, carries up to 300 kg. Not the same as the troop sledge. There are several sledges of different types. A smaller one for carrying light loads and small guns such as the 2 cm Flak and heavier ones to carry up to 1000 kg.

It was not my intention to produce the sledge as a product, but just a means of relaxation for myself. I did my apprenticeship as a carpenter about 50 years ago and wanted to see if I still had the skills.

If there is a demand I can make all these wood based sledges, as they are all hands on work they will be fairly expensive, the wood alone for the troop sledge was around $40.00 at Home Depot and about 5 hours to build.

I wonder which of the big manufacturers will be the first to offer these as I have now built one. I am sure they can make them much cheaper than I can.

If you have a interest in any of the sledges, please e-mail me at toyrific@mindspring.com. If I get enough interest I may take a look at reducing to cost of the wood and see if I can make it up as a kit to be built.

Regards
Mike

PS. Billy, I would still like to get all the info on the cargo sledge.
