It is a hot, humid day...
deep in the Japanese-infested jungles of Saipan. It is July 7th, 1944, and one of the largest Banzai charges of the war has just ended. It was about time too, it had lasted more than 15 hours. In one of the countless American foxholes, a Marine is taking a well-deserved break while his foxhole buddy is off in search of more ammo for their .30 caliber machine gun. With his helmet tipped over his eyes, our Marine tries to forget the horror he has just seen. The attack was the beginning of the end for the Japanese on Saipan. Up to that point, over 30,000 American and Japanese soldiers had died.
