• Pardon the dust while the boys rebuild the site.

The board will be in a state of disarray as I get things sorted out, for a little while at least.

The new incarnation is using Xenforo as the system software. It is much like what we are used to, with a few differences. I will see about making a FAQ to help point out the differences for the members.

One IMPORTANT difference for all of us old timers is that the 'mail' system is replaced with what are called 'conversations'/

There is no 'Inbox' or 'Out box' or 'Sent' folders anymore.

Think of Conversations as private 'threads' or topics that don't exist in a forum, that you start with another member. NOTE: Conversations can include more than one member if you or someone else in the conversaion, likes.
Takes a little getting used to but I am sure you all can get a hang of it.

Only a slightly modified default default Xenforo style is available for now. Once the new SAG style is ready it will be available.

All existing users should be able to login with their usernames and passwords once the site goes up.

If anyone has difficulties logging in please contact me at sixthvanguard@gmail.com.

Thank you for your support and patience. I know it has been a loooong road.

Need some odd Russian Army info

Seems that almost anything relating to the Red Army of WWII is next to impossible to find. I do a search online and get 7000 pages a crap to weed through and still don't find what i'm looking for after hours of digging.

I was wondering if any of you have run across any info on/pics of Russian motorcycle units.

Also, with as many rivers as there are in Russia, with the exception of the wading gear DML is about to release, how did these ol' boy get across? Anyone find pics of them using boats of any kind?

Thanks,

Steve

i remember some photos of a river crossing,it looked like nothing more then simple row boats that they may hane'borrowed' from the locals

What kind of info on motorcycle troops are you looing for? Are you wondering what kind of bike, organizational info, uniform infor, all of the above? I have only seen a couple of pics and oddly enough one of them was on a Harley.

I have seen a couple of pics with rubber rafts similar to German ones but more of wooded boats and rafts and even some canoe-ish type things. Like irish70 said - a lot of "borrowed" stuff from the general populace.

There were Red Army motorcyclists, but there were many more cavalrymen. Recce is a traditional role of cavalry and horses were better suited to the steppes than motorcycles.

Its true the Red Army was a forage army, but it was not a primitive army. No army used the land better than the Red Army. No army was quicker in establishing bridgeheads. In the von Mellenthin(sp) book, he stated if a Red Army bridgehead was not counterattacked within 24 hours, it was too strong to be eliminated by a local counterattack.

Red Cavalry found hidden fords. Red Infantry forced crossings with local materials. Then, Red Army engineers built sophisticated bridges (some "underwater" bridges rested a few inches below the surface) capable of handling heavy supporting elements and tanks.

Don't underestimate the capabilities of the WW2 Red Army.

A good source of information; (though lacking in photos) is "Colossus Reborn; the Red Army at war 1941-43" by David Glantz.

On EBay there are some Indian Motorcycles from WW2.They were resonably priced. Not sure of the maker, but they look just like the 21st version. My gues is this company was the original manufacturer. I think they were around $10.

The original 1/6th Indian's were made by New Ray but as I recall there was an issue with them as somebody had mentioned they were the 1946 versions. Still not being a motorcycle nut, I personally wouldn't know it if I saw it, it was a cool bike and I bought a couple myself.

I know that TRU had a 1/6th kit model of a prewar Indian that would have made a great WWII bike just a year or two ago. I think it was the 1936 or 1938 model Indian.
