Next project: Heeresfeldwagen HF.1

With the upload issue resolved I'm finally able to showcase my next project. This time a german horse wagon, the Heeresfeldwagen 1 (HF.1). As probably most people know, the mainstay of the german army in WW2 relied on traditional horse-drawn transportation. This horse-drawn wagon was used throughout the war so I'm not limited to a particular theather or period for fotoshoots.

The only items I was able to purchase for this project were Cyberhobby german wheelsets and a number of Dragon horses. Everything else (including the harnasses for the horses) will have to be scratchbuild from balsa wood, styrene, metal and leather, or 3d printed. The deadline for this build is march 1st, since I want to show it at the next ActionFigurado and for a planned fotoshoot with a fellow collector/builder who owns a german fieldkitchen.

All my builds always start with research and I was lucky to find an example of the HF.1 in the dutch Oorlogsmuseum at Overloon. I contacted the museum and was able to get full access to the HF.1 to take measurements and pictures. The only condition was that it had to be outside opening hours so as not to give regular visitors the idea that it is ok to step over the barrier to take pictures. So last friday I got up real early to arrive at the museum by 08:00, giving me a 2 hour window unti it opened at 10:00.

Using the measurements I then created a 1:1 3d model, which I then could rescale to 1:6 to get the measurements for my own build. I started with the chassis as everything else basically bolts on to that and was able to built the chassis this weekend. Next step will be to design the under carriage, which is quite a challange as the front axle used three leaf spings at 90 degrees angles... Ah well: it will increase my 3d designing skills.

Stay tuned for updates!

Re: Next project: Heeresfeldwagen HF.1

Looks to be a good start and your right about being mainstream to the entire Wehrmacht during the war. I guess so no big companies decided to offer one because it's not a tank or armored vehicle. Good luck on the build project

HF.1 Build report No. 2

I managed to get quite a bit done this week and weekend. I completed the 3d design of the rear axle's components. I'll be using Cyber-Hobby wheel sets which I will modify so the wheels can actually rotate. I also continued building the wagon from balsa. I've run out of 4mm balsa planks so until I get new supply, I'll start desiging the -turnable- front axle, which will be a challange as it uses three leafsprings for suspension.

HF.1 Build report No. 3

Well, actually more a design than build report. Since the last update I've been able to design all the parts needed for the front turnable axle and wheels. The software I use allows me to assemble several components into a larger component and apply constraints to how the components interact. This made it possible to attach the front axle and wheels component to the rear part of the HF.1 and check if there is enough clearance to actually turn the wheels left/right. Next thing to do is to create 'sprues' of the various components and send them to Shapeways to be printed.

Here are a few pictures of the design.

Dutchman,
Great looking CAD work. The wagon is looking great. What CAD are you using?

I use Geomagic Design, which I believe has been renamed to Alibre Design.

Re: Next project: Heeresfeldwagen HF.1

As my designed parts were being printed, I continued building up the wagon itself. When the parts arrived I was able to dry-fit them after a little cleanup.

Re: Next project: Heeresfeldwagen HF.1

A few more pictures. I was really happy to see that the wagon was practically dead level after installing the wheels. The Cyber-hobby wheels were modified by drilling a 9,5mm hole to accept the axle. Once the wheel is on the axle, it is secured using a hub with a locking peg, just like the real version. This allows the wheels to be removed for transport or storage as they are quite heavy and relatively brittle since they are made of resin.
