Seeking information on Commonwealth WC-57

Been looking for any information regarding the use of the WC-57 by Commonwealth forces, specifically in the North African Campaign. If anyone has information, especially images that would show color scheme and markings, I would appreciate the help.

In lieu of the North African Campaign, I'd go with a Commonwealth European Theatre scheme.

Thanks

I would also be interested if British/Canadian forces used WC-57 in the Western European Theatre..

I Googled it, and none of the images show Commonwealth personnel using the vehicle. That doesn't mean they didn't. The US shipped equipment to North Africa in great numbers, so some of it might have been issued to Commonwealth units until they could be re-supplied.

I think it's unlikely... I don't recall ever seeing one, though the box-bodied ambulance on the same chassis might have been used in small numbers. Canadian productiion of wheeled vehicles to British specification was pretty huge, alongside British production, and seems to have covered everything except Jeeps.

Re: Seeking information on Commonwealth WC-57

The only close photo I have seen was a late war use by the British of the WC52 weapons carrier. It's actually being used by a British media crew and the photo claims to be NW Europe, late war. I'm trying to remember which book I saw it in.
The Wc57 and 52 might have been a good fit for the the Long Range Desert Group to use. They seemed to favour the 30 cwt Chevrolet though.
North Africa seems to have been the ultimate scrounger campaign, so maybe it's possible one or two did get used once the US arrived on scene.

Re: Seeking information on Commonwealth WC-57

My first choice, was to locate photos of the Wc-57 used by the LRDG. Had not thought that it was used as one of the long range vehicles, but my have been used in a command or support roll. I've looked into doing a scratch build of the Chevy LRDG vehicle, but that would be a long term project.

WC51/52 were used by Commonwealth forces in Burma too.

Re: Seeking information on Commonwealth WC-57

The pics show an earlier 1/2 ton command car. The 21c CC is a larger 3/4 command car. Neither would have been used by LDRG. LDRG wanted the extra carrying capacity of the Chevy.

The tires on the Command Car were not good on sand. Great for 4x4ing but easy to bog down in sand. As an owner of a WC56 who did a lot of driving cross country 4x4ing and one who got stuck more than once in beach sand. I can attest to that.

As a question, would the Brit/Canadian use of the radio car WC57 even allow use of the American radios in the WC57, on Brit frequences? I have pics of the WC57 in use of post war Indo China, but none in use by Canuks in the war.

Hi
I do not know if I understand, but here is a picture that I found.

"Not the Western Desert this time. Dodge Command Car. Caption in pencil on the back: "The Jeep they came part of the way to the ride in. The other cove is one of our ground crew."
